Le prix Jean Zay 2008 est attribué à Stéphan Hessel
Créé à l’occasion des célébrations du centenaire de la loi de Séparation des Eglises et de l’Etat, le Prix Jean Zay a pour but de récompenser un livre porteur de valeurs républicaines qu’il soit consacré à un personnage, une période historique ou une réflexion politique; l’auteur se voit attribuer un chèque d’un montant symbolique de 1905 euros.
En 2006, il avait notamment récompensé Caroline Fourest pour son ouvrage (La Tentation obscurantiste). Caroline est aujourd'hui membre du jury, présidé par Nine Moati.
Cette année, il sera décerné à Stephane Hessel, auteur avec Jean-Michel Helvig de Citoyen sans frontières le 3 décembre 2008.
Stéphane Frédéric Hessel (né à Berlin le 20 octobre 1917) est un diplomate, ambassadeur et ancien résistant français. Né allemand, il obtient la nationalité française en 1937. Il a participé notamment à la rédaction de la Déclaration universelle des Droits de l’Homme de 1948.

Homme d’engagement et de culture, ce grand résistant devenu ambassadeur de France est avant tout un citoyen du monde. Entré dans la carrière diplomatique après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il fut un des pionniers de l’O.N.U. et de la Déclaration universelle des Droits de l’Homme, dont on célèbre en 2008 le 60e anniversaire. Né à Berlin en 1917, fils de l’écrivain Franz Hessel et de Helen Grund - le couple anticonformiste immortalisé par le film Jules et Jim -, il a été de tous les combats du XXe siècle : le Front populaire, la France libre, la décolonisation, le tiers-mondisme, le mendésisme, avec pour boussole un humanisme exigeant et une conscience européenne chevillée au corps. A quatre-vingt-dix ans, Stéphane Hessel reste un militant prompt à se mobiliser pour défendre la cause des sans-papiers, celle des peuples de Palestine et de Birmanie, ou pour lancer, aux côtés de Michel Rocard et d’Edgar Morin, un ” Collegium international ” visant à définir une nouvelle éthique universelle de civilisation.
