Catholics for a Free Choice is one of the few religious organizations which refuse the catholic hierarchy and its dogmatic, anti-choice positions. We have echoed one of their campaigns against the privileged status the Vatican has in the UN. The organization recently decided to start a group in Europe. We met its president.

In the context of a possible conservative radicalization in Mexico, the author analyses how, in the summer of 2000, the debate surrounding the reform of the law on abortion took place in the City Parliament of Mexico. Focusing on the strategies of the different actors, she insists on the new importance taken by the argument of abortion as a right which should be protected by a democratic state.

Dispositions européennes sur l’euthanasie (Karine Bréhaux)

The much-debated Diane Pretty case illustrated the last dispositions of EU law on the question of euthanasia. Even though the plaintiff was not successful, a new right came to the fore : the right to die. How is it possible to reconcile in legislation those two basic rights : the right to the protection of life (art. 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights), and the right to die ?
Jean-François Mattei, new French minister for family affairs, is particularly interested in this question. What are his opinions on that matter ?

Even though modern discourse insists on the alleged “mainstreaming” of homosexuality in society, the use of expressions such as “gay neighborhood” in the French press in the past ten years shows that some stereotypes are still very strong, confining us to the realm of the exotic and extraordinary. Moreover, this type of formulations, and the “outing” it implies, can become a way to control gay and lesbian lifestyles. This phenomenon challenges the social practices of freedom that are enacted in space by gays and lesbians to escape the alternative between being invisible and being a “freak show”.

Dossier : Chirac dissout Unité radicale

On august 6, 2002, the French Government has issued a ban on extreme right group Unité Radicale. Maxime Brunerie, the man behind the failed assassination of Jacques Chirac on July 14th, was known to be linked to this militia. But other groups, also linked to Unité Radicale, could be dismantled on the basis of the 1936 law against armed political groups. Fiammetta Venner explains the history of those groups, to the right of the Front National, which can be divided between neo-nazi and national-revolutionary groups.

On a vu, on a lu, on en parle

L’Eurovision en Estonie (Malka Marcovich)

Estonia recently got an important media coverage because of its participation to the Eurovision contest, but not a word was said about the fact that this international TV show was aired from the very heart of a women-trafficking network, despite the increased prostitution it might have generated.
